When we were in school we were in classes all week working hard on learning the subjects. Then when the weekends rolled up, we were definitely ready for some free time and leisure activities. What could possibly be bad about combining learning something new and having fun doing it? Leisure Learning classes here at Doel Reed Center are just that. Every summer we offer a selection of classes for adult learners with an emphasis on the leisure portion. Not only do we get to learn something new, but also we get to meet new people, reconnect with old friends and relax in lovely northern New Mexico.

 

Doel Reed Center has been offering these Leisure Learning Classes since 2012. I attended that first class taught by Ed Walkiewicz covering literary works by some of the writers who, along with visual artists practicing in the region, participated in the creation of a unique "New Mexico Modernism." From the moment I got to Taos, I was hooked...beautiful skies, interesting people, so much to do and see. For our first session, we met at El Monte Sagrado in one of their conference rooms. We started the session by going around the room introducing ourselves. Several of the people I already knew, but there was one attractive woman with short blond hair at the end of the table that I did not know. To myself, I said, “Wow that woman looks a lot like Lauren Hutton”, the famous Revlon model with the gap in her teeth. When it was her turn to introduce herself, she looked up, flashed a gorgeous gaped tooth smile and said, “Hi, I’m Lauren Hutton.” Wow! It really was her! The rest of the week was just as exciting as we discussed books and poems influenced by the culture and landscape of Northern New Mexico, visited museums and historical sites relevant to what we were reading, relaxed and socialized together in the evenings.

 

Since that first session, I have returned each year to experience the fun, enjoy the camaraderie and also learn a little. Hope maybe you will join me to spend some time relaxing and acquiring a little knowledge.
