Winter Solstice Feasts and Dances

with Drs. Martha Yates and Carol Moder
Join the Doel Reed Center in Taos, New Mexico, for a three-and-half-day program on the winter solstice feasts and dances of the northern Rio Grande Pueblo villages, Monday, Dec. 23, to Friday, Dec. 27, 2024.
The winter solstice is the time when seeds and earth are resting and the shortest day passes into the longer. Each day, the Pueblo people use dance as an expression of gratitude. They give thanks to the Earth and their ancestors, as well as to the creatures they depend upon for their lives.
The Deer, Buffalo, Eagle, Turtle, and Matachines are among the ceremonial dances held over the days of the winter solstice. Drs. Martha Yates and Carol Moder will guide attendees through the historical and cultural importance of these celebrations as they visit Taos pueblo, Santa Clara and Posi-Owinge pueblos in Espanola and Picuris pueblo in the foothills of the southern Rocky Mountains.

Participants Share Their Leisure Learning Experience

For years, many friends and alumni have taken advantage of the leisure learning courses offered at the majestic and historic Doel Reed Center for the Arts. It’s truly a unique experience with each year bringing a wide array of course offerings. We talked to sisters and OSU alumnae, Phyllis Hudecki and Jody Simpson, who offered three reasons you should consider joining us next summer in Taos for Leisure Learning Courses.
